Internal Medicine Veterinary Assistant

Caring Hands Clarendon is hiring a full-time  Internal Medicine Vet Assistant to work alongside our team of experienced veterinarians, skilled technicians, and devoted support staff to ensure each animal receives the best possible care during their stay with us. Salary: $18-$23/hr based on experience and skillset.

Schedule: Will work full-time hours Monday-Saturday.

The Internal Medicine Veterinary Assistant assists our Internal Medicine specialist and the rest of the Internal Medicine team with patient care/restraint/monitoring/treatments, maintains inventory, prepares prescriptions, performs routine in-house laboratory work, educates clients regarding Internal Medicine patient care and procedures, and assists with diagnostic procedures (ultrasound, endoscopy, aspirates, biopsies, etc) at Caring Hands Animal Hospital. The Internal Medicine Veterinary Assistant operates under the supervision of the Management Team and works directly with our Veterinary Internist.

Daily Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate appointments by obtaining a history, facilitating patient evaluation, filling medications, optimizing scheduling, and assisting with and performing diagnostics and procedures.
  • Support licensed professionals in performing anesthesia including developing protocols, ensuring patient monitoring and appropriate recovery.
  • Facilitate patient intake, discharge, medical record completion, and appropriate sample submissions.
  • Restrain patients in a safe, efficient, and compassionate manner.
  • Cleaning and maintenance of Internal Medicine diagnostic/medical equipment.
  • Prepare, organize, and maintain exam rooms and procedure spaces.
  • Set up and assist with various endoscopic and ultrasonographic procedures.
  • Maintain efficiency and organization in a fast-paced environment
  • Exhibit professional written and verbal communication in all aspects of client interactions.
  • Demonstrate willingness and ability to train and coach new and developing team members.
  • Demonstrate commitment to further education and growth within a teaching environment.
  • Exhibit responsibility and autonomy when executing technical skills as well as prioritizing and using sound clinical judgment while multi-tasking.
  • Follow DEA, OSHA and established hospital safety guidelines.
  • Follow appropriate safety and handling of hazardous materials.
  • Maintain hospital equipment and understand how to troubleshoot technical issues.

Physical Demands:

To successfully perform the primary functions of this job, the candidate must have the ability to stand for extended periods, bend, walk, sit, talk and listen. Frequently use hands to manipulate, handle or feel (palpate); will reach with hands and arms. Use strength or agility in restraining strong, active animals. Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with assistance where needed. Occasionally handle dogs weighing up to and over 150 lbs.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to hazards associated with aggressive patients; hazards associated with infected animals and controlled substances; exposure to unpleasant odors and noises; exposure to bites, scratches and animal waste.
