Welcoming LaFayette Veterinary Clinic to the VPP Family

Thirty-four years ago, Dr. Renata Rehder and Dr. Thomas MacMackin opened the doors of LaFayette Veterinary Clinic in a historic 1800s building on U.S. 11 in LaFayette, New York. They have practiced side by side there ever since.

Today, we are proud to welcome LaFayette Veterinary Clinic to the Veterinary Practice Partners community, and to congratulate the entire team on this next chapter.

Two Doctors, One Clinic, 34 Years

Dr. MacMackin, known to clients as Dr. Tom, earned his veterinary degree from Cornell University in 1990 and loves surgery and challenging cases. Dr. Rehder graduated from the Universidade de Sao Paulo in Brazil, earned her master’s degree at Cornell, and says her favorite part of the job is pediatrics and educating clients.

Dr. Monica Bunkenburg-Knorr, a Louisiana State University graduate and Fear Free Certified veterinarian, works to make every visit as comfortable as possible for the pet in front of her.

The community has noticed the care that happens inside the clinic. LaFayette was named Platinum in the 2025 Syracuse Community Votes.

A Team That Stays

Longevity says a lot about a clinic. Practice manager Erin joined in 2008. Licensed veterinary technician Katie started as an intern in 2007 and has been licensed since 2008. Jessica has been on the front team since 2013. Dr. Wortel joined in 2017, and Dr. Hunter Powell graduated from Cornell in 2026 with a particular interest in surgery and dentistry.

Part of the Community

LaFayette’s team lives where it works, and it shows. Each year the clinic sponsors the Lafayette Community Council Little League and basketball teams. The doctors speak at school career fairs, give Boy Scout and Girl Scout groups tours of the clinic, and welcome students who want to job shadow or volunteer. The team has collected supplies for area shelters, taken part in Canine Carnival and Pumpkins and Pooches, walked and run for causes including Relay for Life, and even hosted its own American Red Cross blood drive.

To Dr. Rehder, Dr. MacMackin, Dr. Bunkenburg-Knorr, and everyone at LaFayette Veterinary Clinic: congratulations, and welcome to the VPP family. Thirty-four years in, and the best is still ahead.
